1. Fish

The advice is to eat fish twice a week, but it is okay to eat more. Fish is packed with omega-3 fatty acids and research shows that this can prevent dry eyes. The more omega-3 fatty acids you ingest, the less eye complaints you experience. This nutrient is found in all kinds of fish such as: salmon, herring, mackerel, tuna, trout and sardines.

2. Nuts and pulses

Like fish, nuts and pulses contain omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin E. This vitamin is known to protect your eyes against eye diseases such as cataracts. Cataract is a clouding of the eye lens that can cause blurred or double vision. The following nuts and legumes contain vitamin E: walnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, lentils, peanuts and pine nuts.

3. Carrots

Perhaps the best known food that is good for the eyes; carrots! This vegetable is rich in beta-carotene and the body converts this substance into vitamin A, which contributes to healthy eyes. A deficiency of this vitamin can even lead to blindness. Vitamin A helps the retina absorb light, converting it into electrical signals that are sent to the brain. This allows the retina to function optimally and allows us to distinguish dark from light and colours.

4. Meat

Meat contains zinc, which is very important for vitamin A’s function. The thing is, zinc helps carry vitamin A from the liver to your retina. Without zinc, vitamin A can’t actually do much. Zinc can also help prevent myopia. Beef, in particular, is high in zinc.

5. Green vegetables

Spinach, kale, endive, broccoli and cabbage all possess the same nutrient, namely lutein. This reduces the risk of eye diseases such as cataracts and helps keep the eyes, especially the retina, healthy. Lutein is also found in eggs, by the way.
